It’s not often that a piece of news manages to be equally shocking and worthy of a yawn. But then Twitter is not just any company, service, phenomenon.

Our shocker/ho-hummer comes compliments of The Telegraph, which reports on a new study carried out by three universities in the U.S. that found:

- 130 million useless tweets are sent every day (ho-hum, no surprise there)
- 70 million interesting tweets are sent ever day (shocking, you’ve got to be kidding)

Based on the people I follow on Twitter, I’d have thought the ratio would have been closer to 1/8 interesting and 7/8 not, which leads me to think I think I need to do some pruning. But I digress.

Too many hashtags (#shock, #ho-hum), lame status updates (I’m cleaning my room and this is boring), and complaining tweets (why won’t my boss recognise that I deserve a raise) were all particularly hated, according to the research.

This shocking and ho-humming piece of news comes from research carried out by Carnegie Mellon, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The researchers asked 1,500 Twitter users to comment on more than 40,000 tweets from the 21,000 accounts they jointly followed. Complete findings are to be presented in Seattle this week at a computer science conference.

The most annoying tweets, according to the research as well as yours truly, are those between people carrying out a private conversation (@Boring thanks, I’ll look into that; @JustAsBoring great, let me know what you think). Facebook-esque status updates and check-ins with Foursquare and also particularly hated.

Okay so you’ve had a look at your tweets and realise the majority of your content is no doubt falling into that pile of annoying dribble. So what to do? Here are nine rules for making your tweets interesting from the study’s authors and as taken from The Telegraph:

1. Old news is no news. Twitter is fast moving so information gets stale quickly so don't repeat links that have already been repeated several times.
2. Contribute to a story rather than just comment on it. Which means add your own opinion or a new fact or don't bother.
3. Keep it short. Even 140 characters can be too long for some people's rambling comments.
4. Limit the syntax. Do not overuse hashtags, @mentions and abbreviations.
5. Don't tell everyone where you are all the time. Twitter users particular hate Foursquare check-ins
6. Don't just link to a blog or a photo without giving readers a reason why they should click on it.
7. Don't whine. Negative sentiments and complaints were disliked.
8. Be a tease. If you want someone to go onto your website, don't give away the whole story in a tweet but use it as a way of hooking the reader.
9. Celebrities - the tiniest detail of your daily routine is not any more interesting because you are famous. People want your professional insights, not to know what you like in a sandwich.

<![CDATA[Eni, BASF and UBS come out top in the KWD Webranking Global 100]]> With 87 points out of 100, the Italian oil and gas producer Eni has retained it first position in the KWD Webranking Global 100. The study analysed the online corporate communications of the 100 largest companies by market value worldwide (based on the Financial Times Global 500). Eni was closely followed by German chemical maker BASF (83 points) and Swiss bank UBS (68 points).

The KWD Webranking, in addition to the FT Global 100 classification, has compiled the Europe 500 and various country editions ranking the best corporate websites. This year, the research surveyed around 950 companies worldwide.

The average score for the Global 100 companies was 41.9 points, below the halfway mark of 50 points, which can be regarded as a website of good quality.

When searching for the most requested information by professional users (the analysts, investors and business journalists that responded to the KWD Webranking questionnaire), the research found that:

 • Almost all companies present their latest annual and interim reports on their corporate websites, as well as archives spanning at least three years
 • Only 19% outline the markets they operate in and describe their competitive environment
 • Only 7% present their financial goals and a fifth describe their growth drivers or give an indication of their future performance
 • Just one in four presents on its websites information about interest-bearing liabilities

The KWD Webranking is the annual research conducted by the consultancy KWD, the digital division of Hallvarsson & Halvarsson, in collaboration with Lundquist.

Top 10 in the KWD Webranking Global 100

1. Eni (87 points)
2. BASF (83)
3. UBS (68)
4. Siemens (64,75)
5= Roche (63,5)
5= Royal Dutch Shell (63,5)
7= Daimler (62,75)
7= Statoil (62,75)
9. Anglo American (62,25)

<![CDATA[English Wikipedia shut down today to protest against US online piracy bill]]> By Giulia Dini

This is what you will find today if you try to search for something on the world’s most famous encyclopaedia:

Wikipedia has joined Reddit, Mozilla, Wordpress and hundreds of other websites in a global strike to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26 with the aim of fighting the dissemination of pirated digital content on the internet. However, opponents argue this bill is focusing too much on controlling websites that allow file sharing rather than on those who unlawfully generate pirated content.

This is the first time the English version of Wikipedia joins such a protest. The Italian version shut down its website in October as a protest against paragraph 29 of the DDL intercettazioni (wiretapping bill), as we discussed on in a blog post at the time (in Italian only).

A heated discussion is going on on Twitter (using the hashtag #SOPA). @BarackObama tweeted on Sunday why the White House decided not to supportthe SOPA bill as it is presented.

@jimmy_wales
, co-founder of the encyclopaedia, announced yesterday through his Twitter profile the #Wikipediablackout decision.

On the other hand, as a supporter of the initiative, @rupertmurdoch also joined the discussion on Twitter

Frieda Brioschi, President of Wikimedia Italy, told Lundquist: “I support en.wiki and I hope their protest helps! I also hope that the repetition of certain actions - such as poorly drafted laws and the subsequent protests of netizens - generates constructive debate around these issues.”

And you? What do you think about SOPA? Let us know by commenting on this space.

<![CDATA[Barilla, the issue of food nutrition and the concept of a social enterprise]]> By KarimBruneo

How to deal with GMOs and biotechnology in different geographical contexts? Does GDP really measure the wellbeing of a country? What other key indicators could be used for measuring wellbeing? How can we guarantee food supply to millions of malnourished people living primarily in agricultural societies?These are just some of the critical questions that were raised at The Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition’s Third Annual International Forum, which took place at Milan’s Bocconi University on November 30-December 1.

The conference focused on major issues related to food and nutrition and is designed to stimulate debate about the relationship between food security, health, environment, economics and society under the guidance of international experts from the world of science, economics and culture.

Lundquist attended a couple of workshops that provided insights and perspectives from leading academics, industry experts and general public. The need to understand the difference between GMOs and biotechnology and their role in agricultural economies was underlined by Monty P. Jones (Executive Director of Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa), Benedikt Haerling (Director of Foundation on Future Farming) and Vandana Shiva (Founder and Director of Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy).

Jean-Paul Fitoussi (President of the ObservatoireFrançais des ConjoncturesEconomiques and advisor of the BCFN), Nic Marks (Fellow and Founder of the Centre for Wellbeing, New Economic Foundation) and Enrico Giovannini (President of ISTAT) among the others discussed what the final objective of an economic policyshould be, trying to define means and indicators for the measurement of people’s quality of life and their limitations.

A final message was launched by a group of high school students, who addressed a touching letter to the world’s top leaders asking them to act (or better react) against injustice, violence and inequality and leave a safe future for future generations.

Taken as a whole, the forum raised interesting questions for us about the definition of a social enterprise as well as public expectation of its activities. The fact that Barilla organized this two-day event is in our view a great example or (why not?) a best practice.

For those who were unable to attend, you can find videos of all the workshopson BCFN’s website and tweets by users who participated are still available on Twitter under the hashtag #BCFNForum.

Next appointment is slated for 28-29 November 2012.

<![CDATA[Il Sole 24 Ore publishes results of the 4th CSR Online Awards, won by Telecom Italia for the first time]]> by James Osborne

Il Sole 24 Ore, Italy’s top business newspaper, has published an exclusive article this morning on the results of the 2011 edition of the CSR Online Awards Italy. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Lundquist’s research into how the internet is used to communicate corporate responsibility is published in association with the newspaper.

The awards will be presented at a gala dinner in Venice on Thursday, along with winners of our rankings for Europe 100, Austria, Germany, Nordic region, Switzerland and UK. The awards ceremony, which will be followed on Friday by a day-long seminar on the future of online communications with international speakers and case studies from leading companies, will be broadcast in streaming (probably on this blog) and can be followed on Twitter via the hashtag #CSRawards.

The article in Il Sole highlighted how the ranking was won this year by Telecom Italia for the first time, followed by Fiat SpA in second place. Eni and Hera – both previous winners of the awards – finished in joint third. The release of the results coincided with publication of the CSR Online Awards Europe today, where Telecom Italia earned third place, followed by Eni in fourth.

Il Sole focuses on the “gaps” in online communications that are made evident by the study. It points out, for example, that 36% of Italy’s biggest listed companies have virtually no system for disclosure of non-financial information via the web. In addition, 15 of the 19 companies that managed to increase their score compared with 2010 are placed in the top 20 positions, meaning there is very little improvement on the part of companies that have little or no reporting capacities for corporate responsibility.

To illustrate this clear split among Italy’s top firms, the newspaper presents a chart showing that 36% of companies provide no CSR report online, 34% have one in PDF while 30% have an interactive version.

You can read more about the results in our news announcement. The article from Il Sole 24 Ore is available for download here (in Italian): Sostenibilità. I buchi nella rete (PDF 326 Kb).

<![CDATA[Greater disclosure coming to Italy on pay and "golden parachutes"]]> By Sara Rusconi

It was back February when Consob, the Italian equivalent of the Securities and Exchange Commission, issued a recommendation to companies requiring them to publish more detail not only about remuneration but also about succession plans. The recommendation was part of the process towards new Italian legislation regarding increased transparency in management compensation, which will become law in 2012 and bring into force EU legislation.

Consob has now started a consultation exercise about changes to its Issuers Regulation that will make it compulsory for companies to publish a report on pay at least 21 days before each AGM. The report will have to contain a first part with a description of the company's policy on remuneration while the second part will detail the pay of specific managers and directors.

At the moment, listed companies in Italy are not required to communicate their remuneration policy to the market, although they must disclose compensation figures and outline incentive schemes tied to financial instruments.

The proposed changes to Consob’s regulation will require more disclosure about managers’ pay and also clear information about remuneration policies, including stock options and golden parachutes.

We welcome these modifications, which are in line with our push for more transparency in financial communication. We hope that the increased attention being placed on pay will encourage companies to give more visibility to this kind of information on their websites and not just to comply with the new regulations by adding a couple of pages to their annual reports.

For the moment, the latest results of our annual KWD Webranking study show that still 72% of the largest 100 Italian listed companies do not present any information on remuneration online, a number that has improved only marginally since the Consob recommendation issued in February (it was 79% in 2010).

Italia), Luca Tremolada (Senior Editor Sole 24 Ore), Raffaella Giuri (Direttore Responsabile Jobmeeting.it), Domitilla Ferrari (Social Media Strategist in Arnoldo Mondadori Editore).
